Floyd Mayweather Outboxes Canelo Alvarez, Who's Next For "Money"?
Floyd "Money" Mayweather unified the Junior Middleweight title against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in his top grossing fight since he fought Oscar De La Hoya back in 2007. Mayweather reportedly made over 80 million dollars for this record breaking fight living up to his position as the highest paid athlete in sports. This was a title fight that fans were excited to see because it was believed to be a competitive fight between two undefeated title holders. Unlike many of Mayweather's previous opponents Canelo was seen to be someone capable of beating Mayweather or at least putting up a good competition since the super fight with Manny Pacquiao never got made before Pacquiao got knocked out cold in his last fight. Canelo was a power puncher with youth(23) and a significant size advantage over the ageing(36) but more experienced Mayweather. What followed however was a dominant performance by Mayweather, out boxing Alvarez and showing people why he's said to be the best defensive boxer alive. Mayweather managed to use his speed advantage to negate Alvarez's size advantage. Mayweather was too elusive for Alvarez, many of Alvarez's connecting blows were only able to just glance Mayweather leading to a frustrated Alvarez and a majority decision for Mayweather by the judges.
The question now is who's next for the undefeated Mayweather? There doesn't seem to be a lot of fighters left that will be a competitive challenge for Mayweather with still four more contract fights left in his deal with Showtime. A name that has been thrown out there is Danny Garcia, the undefeated title holder from the 140 pound division (63kg). Another is Amir Khan(28-3, 19 KOs) if he manages to defeat his upcoming opponent Devon Alexander. Amir Khan use to be seen as the next greatest thing however now this fight would most likely result in another dominating display for Mayweather, maybe even his first knockout in years. Other possibilities include if his willing to fight his undefeated protege Adrien Broner or Manny Pacquiao if he gets past his upcoming fight with Brandon Rios.
